Growth Form: Trees or shrubs.

Stems: Pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, sometimes crowded toward the tips of the branches. Blades often coriaceous. Margins usually crenate or serrate. Petiolate. Stipules caducous.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary racemes. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx of 4–5 sepals; sepals distinct or connate at base. Corolla of 4–5 petals, fimbriate, lobed, or dentate at apex. Stamens 10 to numerous, distinct, inserted within a 4–5-lobed disk; anthers dithecal, opening by terminal pores or short transverse slits. Ovary superior, (1)2–7-celled, placentation axile; ovules 2 to numerous per cell, anatropous; style filiform or subulate.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; mesocarp fleshy or fibrous; endocarp bony or sometimes fibrous. Seeds 1–7 per fruit; with copious oily and proteinaceous endosperm; without an aril.
